Recap on My Daughter's
Leadership Journey

April 18, 2023 | Written By Abigail Mercado

Since my daughter Alessandra studied in APEC  Schools, she has grown a lot from being a silent and shy student - to an active student leader to class, clubs, and events. I never thought of her being interested in joining this Amplify at her new branch. Last year, my daughter was kind of hesitant to move out from her site APEC North Fairview because her close friends were there and it feels like a second home for her already. Over the last 4 years, it was surely a fun ride for my daughter to experience three branches of APEC Schools. When she was still in Doña Juana branch, her confidence in speaking improved as she was often chosen to be the group facilitator in Life Labs. I have seen that she independently learnt how not to rely on my opinion rather than just working on to better herself in academics. Alessandra explores chances when the pandemic happened. She tries to balance academics while being offered to run for a position of Vice President in Student Council in her 9th grade. But unfortunately, she declined it and when I asked, she was afraid of the criticisms she might get off towards her working people. I was there for her in those times that she didn't believe on what opportunities may perhaps welcome her.

But time indeed tells that with the help of a parent and teachers, a single child could grow and realize when they are with someone who willingly gives them a piece of advice and symbolizes hope. When 10th grade came, I was proud of her when I heard that she was the research leader of their group while balancing as well as being the project leader of their grade level in all branches. The fruit of her patience and perseverance proves that it takes time to take a risk, but there's no one of us that needs to get ready to grab every chance. Years of being an introvert, she made friends and was awarded a merit, leadership, team captain, the sensei, and shining star as an acknowledgement. Alex shows up as a woman she is becoming by running on her senior year this 11th grade as the SC President, hosting school events, joining academic contests while having the mindset of "it's now or never". Now that I see her spreading her wings through her doubts, I can tell the effectiveness that APEC really got to offer for its students. A student centered organization that is always for the better. I believe that the environment that she had in APEC, impacts her way of perceiving herself. Truly, better each day.
