Just Another Breath of Air

April 30, 2023 | Written By Milo Sevilla

It was a sunny Saturday morning in the countryside. Kenny was heavily asleep on his bed. Just like every morning of his life, the day starts with the sound of morning birds chirping from the outside of his house, the continuous waves of water from the lake nearby and the rattling of trees surrounding his house could be heard from the only ajar curtainless window of his bedroom, making the reflection of sunlight shine slowly towards his face as he only sleeps on one side, facing it. This is his way of waking himself up rather than hearing the annoying alarm sound from his phone. For him, tech alarm clocks destroy his morning.

Just like any day for Kenny, the sunlight is really effective. The clock strikes at exactly 6 o’clock in the morning, the light still reflecting on his face. Finally bothered him, he turned his face away. He moved away his blanket covering him and slowly sat upright, turning his back away from the window which made his bed creak from his movement, rubbed his eyes, ran his finger through his soft brown hair, yawned, and finally stood up and stretched. He walked towards the window, slid one frame on the side fully open, placed his palms on the window sill, and put his head out - looking at his everyday scenery as the wind softly blew his face.

The view was just stunningly beautiful. From afar, a big curved lake could be seen, extending its massive size of orange-skyed reflection on the horizon as the sun reflected on its rippling freshwater, while hiding behind the farthest mountain from sight. The sky gave a calming clear orange-bluish color. On each side of the lake were two other dark green mountains, it appeared to be like a very big valley filled with water in the center. A flock of birds could also be seen flying around the lake, diving down constantly towards the water, searching for fish to eat. The trees on each side of his window swayed slowly from left to right as the cold wind started to become stronger. He deeply breathed in, smelling the fresh air of nature.

“What a gift of life,” he whispered to himself. He closed his eyes and deeply thought about everything that had happened recently.

He recalled an event of his life from the past month. Starting from an unforgettable moment that greatly affected him, he finally let go of the love of his life. Both of them realized that everything must end for a while to achieve their goals for each other. For some reason, Kenny found it hard to accept it as he found himself being more of an achiever with his love than being without. To move on and wish his luck to win her back again, he focused more on what they agreed on for the benefit of each other. It was hard for him, but he knew it was a must.

Everything has been hard for Kenny. Instead of this heartbreak bringing him down, he chose to be stronger than ever. It was a rough start, but he chose to make it easier by doing everything he loves. May it be singing, dancing, reading, or even admiring the calm view from his bedroom window just like what he always does.

“Life is unfair,” he thought. But for him, what’s more unfair is to not appreciate what you already have that other people do not have, just like his view! Only a few people would be able to see it, including himself. Sooner or later, it will just be a memory, so cherish everything now before it’s too late! The gift of nature may or may not be appreciated by anyone. But for Kenny, being an obsessive nature-admirer, this view is a lifelong gift to set aside his negative emotions.

Kenny opened his eyes again, feeling the breeze of wind touching his face and his eyes on the horizon.“It really is a gift. Nature, you are a savior,” he whispered to himself again before he realized something, “And, oh! I must prepare now.” Before proceeding to dress up and eat his breakfast downstairs, he took just another breath of air.
