Hamilton: The Musical

Hamilton: The Musical is a play by renowned playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to have its Asian premiere in the Philippines. The highly anticipated production will take place at the Solaire Theatre beginning in September 2023, with tickets available for purchase starting April 16 through TicketWorld, an online platform for buying tickets to plays, movies, and concerts. The show will last for about 2 hours and 50 minutes long, including the intermission. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton has gained popularity since it first came to Broadway in 2015, and has since won awards including an Emmy, a Grammy, and a total of 11 out of 16 nominations in Tony Awards.

The cast who will be performing at Solaire Theatre is yet to be announced, however there have been a few Filipino-blooded talents who have performed at the play in its past shows. Marc dela Cruz is the first Fil-Am to bag the role of Alexander Hamilton, and has also played King George, John Laurens, Philip Hamilton, James Reynolds, and Philip Schuyler. Filipina singer and actress Rachelle Ann Go who has starred in various hit musicals, played Eliza Schuyler who is the wife of the title character, and along with her, Filipino-British actress and singer Christine Allado played the role of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds.

Last but not the least, Filipino-American choreographer Karla Puno Garcia had been cast as a swing in the play. A swing is someone who covers multiple roles in a production, responsible for learning a variety of parts and taking over when an actor or actress is unable to perform).

"Hamilton" is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and show tunes. "Hamilton" has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theater–a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education.

The play which is inspired by the book Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow dives into the history of America in the eyes of an orphan who later on became one of America’s Founding Fathers. Hamilton: The Musical was described by the New York Times as a “theatrical landmark that has transformed theater and the way we think about history.”

Alexander Hamilton was the first-ever Secretary of Treasury of the United States of America. Husband to Elizabeth Schuyler and father of 8 children. Hamilton was also known as the youngest Founding Father of America.

Aaron Burr was the third vice president of the United States of America. He's more known to be Hamilton's biggest rival. Burr defeated Hamilton in a duel ultimately causing the latter's death.

Elizabeth "Eliza" Schuyler Hamilton was the loyal and generous wife of Alexander Hamilton who was also known to be an American socialite. Born as the middle child of the prominent Dutch family in New York, the Schuyler family, Eliza was also a philanthropist who often defended the works of Alexander Hamilton. She was also known to be the co-founder and deputy director of "Graham Windham", the first private non-profit orphanage founded in New York.

Angelica Schuyler Church was the sister of Elizabeth Hamilton and sister-in-law of Alexander Hamilton. Despite being his sister-in-law, Hamilton felt an attraction towards Angelica. In fact, Chernow, the author of the autobiography Alexander Hamilton, said that the attraction between the two were so strong that people thought they were lovers.

George Washington was the wisest amongst the group of young revolutionaries, the first president of the United States of America, he was a great friend of Hamilton. He was also the one to appoint Hamilton as Secretary of Treasury.

John Laurens was considered as Hamilton's best friend. Laurens was an American soldier who served alongside Hamilton in the battle of Yorktown. He was also known to be a committed anti-slavery advocate.

Philip Hamilton was the eldest child of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton. At age 19, he went up against George Eacker in a duel and was shot to death.

Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette was a hero of both American and French revolutions who happens to be one of Hamilton's closest friends. He and Hamilton became close friends after fighting side-by-side in the battle of Yorktown.

Thomas Jefferson was the United States of America's third president and second vice president. He was one of Hamilton's biggest rivals and political enemy though Hamilton has shown respect for Jefferson more than he has ever shown respect for Burr.

Hercules Mulligan was an Irish tailor, spy, and another close friend of Hamilton who also happened to have lived with him. Mulligan and Hamilton used to engage in late night discussions which sharpened Hamilton's desire for independence.
