‘False Nostalgia’: A newly published book by JC Punongbayan to Debunk the “Golden Age” myths during the Marcos Regime
by Milo Sevilla

During the Marcos Administration led by former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. around the time of his dictatorship, it has been debated by history experts and pro-marcos people whether the effect of his administration has been beneficial or disastrous. One example of this is the historical declaration of “Martial Law” declared by the President himself on September 21, 1972, wherein he claimed that he had done so in response to a “communist threat”. However, it was more than just a response to a threat, the establishment of this law affected our country’s economy and people as well in a negative way which many still deny to this day.

As a response to the myths of pro-marcos and apologists claiming that the country was in a perfect state during the Marcos regime, PhD University of the Philippines School of Economics assistant professor, economist, and author, JC Punongbayan recently published a book, False Nostalgia: The Marcos ‘Golden Age’ Myths and How to Debunk Them, aiming to debunk the “golden age” myth once and for all. The chapters in the book were arranged for each  myth/false claim that many people believe in and it is corrected by his and his team’s own research with statistical data as well as with graph illustrations.

Book Reviews:

“This book is going to be perhaps the most lethal weapon in the arsenal against the so-far partially successful attempts (thanks to social media) to tout the 20-year Marcos era (January 1966 to February 1986) as a “golden age” in Philippine history…”

- Solita C. Monsod

Professor Emeritus

University of the Philippines

“This book will help us put a stop to the spread of false narratives and bring to light what really happened during one of the darkest periods in Philippine history…”

- Atty. Chel Diokno

Human Rights Lawyer and

Chair, Free Legal Assistance Group

“Punongbayan stepped out of the ivory tower and immersed himself in conversations taking place in social media to bring us this illuminating book. He deftly collapses the false Marcos and martial law narratives on the Philippine economy using facts backed by authoritative references. False Nostalgia is truly a useful and easy-to-read myth buster.”

- Marites Dañguilan Vitug

The author claimed on his twitter account that the book has been sold out in various online-shopping applications. “UPDATE: Over the weekend my book #FalseNostalgia became sold-out TWICE on Lazada! Sold-out na rin sa Shopee!”

If you want your own copy of the book, you have nothing to worry as he also added that the publisher will soon re-stock more copies, “@ateneopress will soon replenish stocks, and they already confirmed a 2nd printing—just 2+ days since the launch!”
